The Three Camps

A Geography Lesson in Adventure

HADEDA Creek isn't one camp, it's three distinct personalities sharing the same stretch of the Vaal riverbank and a mutual disrespect for sleeping in nature’s luxury. Here's how our empire is divided, where to enter without getting lost, and what you'll find once you've navigated our famously optimistic signage.

HADEDA CREEK: MAIN CAMP & BUSH CAMP

The Gates (Because We Have Options): We operate through Gates 1 through 4, which sounds impressively organized until you realize we named them in the order we acquired land, not in any logical geographic sequence.

Enter through Gate 4 — this is your main entrance, where Reception lives and where confused first-timers usually end up after ignoring their GPS and following a bakkie that may or may not have been going to the same place. Gate 4 gets you to the nerve center of camp operations: check-in, orientation, and your first glimpse of organized chaos. We will provide you with a security gate code closer to your booking date.

Car parking at each gate means you won’t experience the traffic nightmare of 200 people trying to unload simultaneously. Gravel, generous, designed for school buses, family sedans, and that one Land Cruiser whose owner definitely wanted everyone to notice it and all the “I’ve travelled here” bumper sticker collection.

Reception: Where Your Adventure Officially Begins. Located at Gate 4, this is check-in headquarters, the answer depot for every question from “Where’s my tent?” to “Can I really take my phone rafting?” (Drybag only), and the hub you’ll return to when someone inevitably loses something important. Friendly staff who’ve heard every excuse, seen every packing disaster, and can direct you anywhere using landmarks like “past the big tree, left at the HADEDA Creek logo”.

HADEDA Hall: Our Conference Centre. Our main conference facility is where schools brief, corporates strategize, and wedding parties gather before scattering to different quarters of the camp. Equipped with projectors, tiered seating for 80, air conditioning (because Free State summers show no mercy), Wi-Fi that changes like the river flow rate, and enough tea and coffee to fuel a hostile takeover. Watch out for the otters outside; they do not respect your PowerPoint schedule.

ACCOMMODATION: Sleep Where the River Views Are Free

26 Tented Accommodation Options spread across Main and Bush Camp, all with river and mountain views because if you’re sleeping in canvas, you deserve a decent sunrise & star-scattered night sky.

1-Bedroom Ensuite Tents — Proper beds, private bathrooms, fairy lights for ambiance, and enough comfort that “glamping” isn’t false advertising. Perfect for couples, honeymooners, or anyone who wants adventure with a side of actual sleep.

2-Bedroom Ensuite Tents — Family-sized luxury. Two rooms, proper bathroom, enough space that nobody has to sleep in the car or strangle their siblings.

1-Bedroom Tents — Cozy, clean, comfortable. Shared ablutions nearby. For the guests who like canvas, comfort, but don’t shy away from a little journey to the bathroom.

8-Sleeper Tent – Space to share, comfort to enjoy! Ideal for families and groups, featuring 8 single beds with all linen and bath towels provided. Need a little privacy? An optional tent divider creates two cosy sleeping areas with 4 beds each. And we can even set up two beds plus a mattress converter to give you a grand king bed. With a tea and coffee station just next door at Monkey’s Den, everything is set for a relaxed, hassle-free stay.

School Group Dorms — Multi-bed units designed for the organized chaos of 30 teenagers discovering independence. Clean, functional, and the birthplace of midnight giggling that teachers pretend not to hear.

All accommodation enjoys river and mountain views — awake to the Vaal’s mirror-calm mornings, fall asleep to frogs debating philosophy, and wonder why you ever thought hotel rooms with parking-lot vistas were acceptable.

COMMUNAL KITCHEN HUBS: Cook, Gather, & Savour.

Because not everyone wants full catering during their stays at HADEDA Creek, we’ve built communal kitchen hubs where self-caterers can cook, braai, and debate about whose turn it is to wash up.

MAIN CAMP Kitchen Hubs:

Eddy’s Eatery — Equipped kitchen, covered eating area, braai facilities, and enough counter space that three families can coexist without knife fights.

Otters Hide — Riverside location, shaded cooking zone, the kind of spot where someone always forgets the salt and borrows from neighbors.

Treasure’s Cove — Kid-friendly setup near play areas. Surfaces designed to survive juice spills, mud smears, and the inevitable chaos when someone discovers ants in the sugar jar.

BUSH CAMP Kitchen Hubs:

Fisherman’s Cottage (By the Pool) — Prime real estate with pool views, braai facilities, and the constant temptation to abandon cooking duties for a swim. Wash-up kitchen facilities, board games den, library nook, shaded seating, and the best sunset angles for procrastination.

On the Rocks — Rustic riverside setup where the cooking happens slower because everyone keeps getting distracted by the view. Full kitchen facilities, outdoor braai, and enough seating for extended family gatherings that inevitably involve stories starting with “Remember when…”

Monkeys Den — Named for the opportunistic vervet monkeys who will absolutely steal your banana if you’re not vigilant. Covered kitchen area, braai zone, and a reputation for being the hub where camp legends are born over late-night fires.

SEVEN COMMUNAL BRAAI AREAS

Scattered strategically across Main and Bush Camp, our braai zones ensure you’re never more than a short walk from open flames and the smell of boerewors. Each area features:

  • Built-in braai stands (because balancing grids on rocks is so 1980’s)
  • Seating areas for the crowd that inevitably gathers to the braai flames
  • Lighting for those who insist on braaing after sunset
  • Proximity to ablutions (important after six hours of eating & drinking)

South Africans treat braais as a sacred ritual. We provide the infrastructure. You bring the meat, the debate about fire temperature, and the uncle who insists he “knows how to do it properly.”

MAIN CAMP HUB: Where Everything Happens

The social and operational heart of Hadeda Creek, Main Camp hosts the facilities that keep 120 guests fed, entertained, and moderately supervised.

Wacky Paddlers Bar — This is the historic original bar from day one of HADEDA Creek – it’s survived every flood, so it’s a MUST-VISIT-STOP… the upside-down canoe that must be attempted by all who visit our legendary camp… watch this space for your inner legend! The watering hole for parents who’ve survived a day of watching their kids attempt zip lines, teachers who deserve hazard pay, and wedding guests celebrating riverside vows. Cold drinks, river views, and the kind of atmosphere where strangers become friends over shared stories of capsized rafts.

Hammerkop Tuckshop — Stocked with essentials: cold drinks, healthy snacks, ice cream, sweets that will haunt teachers later, sunscreen you forgot, insect repellent you desperately need, and those random camp supplies like waterproof bags and forgotten toiletries. Opens early, closes late, saves the day… repeatedly.

Kingfisher Kidzone — Dedicated shaded play area for the under-10 crowd who aren’t quite raft the rapid just yet. Jungle gyms, swings, slides, and enough space for them to burn energy while parents briefly remember what sitting down feels like.

Creekside Cafe Restaurant — Our main dining facility pumps out meals for hundreds daily. Hearty South African fare: potjies, braais, breakfast spreads that could resurrect the dead, lunches packed for river trips, and dinners substantial enough to silence even teenage appetites. School groups get full catering (three meals plus snacks, dietary requirements accommodated). Campers and glamppers can book meal packages or go rogue with self-catering. The coffee is strong. The portions are generous. The views are free.

Lifeguard Tavern (By Pools and Volleyball Court) — Poolside hub serving cold drinks, light snacks, and the perfect vantage point for watching volleyball matches devolve into competitive chaos. Shaded seating, quick service, and close enough to the pools that wet kids can grab snacks without dripping through the entire camp.

Paradise Flycatcher — Activity briefing and equipment hub where groups kit up for adventures, guides explain safety protocols, and someone always asks, “But do I really need to wear the helmet?” (Yes. Always yes.)

Hadeda Hall: Conference & Training facilities near the rustling sounds of the Vaal River – we host 80 guests for corporate retreats to schoolcamps, all enjoying the benefits of our famous Creekside Cafe catering and teambuilding program additions.

THE ACTIVITY ZONES

Zipline — Strung across the gorge like a dare someone made permanent. Harnesses mandatory. Screaming optional but highly encouraged. Views mid-flight are spectacular if you remember to open your eyes.

3 Swimming Pools — Because one would be boring:

  • Olympic-length lap pool for serious swimmers and show-off cannonballers
  • Two leisure pools for splashing, floating, and the younger crowd who haven’t discovered depth anxiety yet

All three maintained with chemical precision because murky water kills a camp vibe faster than a hadeda at dawn.

Volleyball Court — Sand, net, and the birthplace of grudge matches that last entire weekends. Corporate teams use it for trust-building. School groups use it for bragging rights. Families use it to discover who’s actually competitive under all that civility.

Fishing Zones — Designated spots along the Vaal where anglers can cast lines in peace (or competitive silence). Bring your own gear, stories about “the one that got away,” and patience for the river’s moods. Catch-and-release encouraged. Exaggeration inevitable.

BUSH CAMP: The Quieter Cousin

If Main Camp is the extrovert, Bush Camp is the introvert — still social, just more selectively. Same river, same views, slightly more space between you and the chaos.

Bush Camp shares the seven communal braai areas and benefits from the same fishing zones, but operates with three dedicated kitchen hubs (Fisherman’s Cottage overlooking pool & river, On the Rocks, & Monkeys Den) that cater to guests who prefer their adventure with a side of solitude.

Accommodation here leans toward tented glamping and family-friendly camping sites — still gorgeous river views, still access to all Main Camp activities (a short walk or quick shuttle), but with that extra breath of space when you need the world to be a little quieter.

Bush Camp guests still use all of Main Camp facilities (pools, restaurant, tuckshop, bar), but return to sleeping quarters where the hadedas are slightly less opinionated and the evening campfires feel more intimate.

Fleetwoods: The River Outpost

13 hectares. One gate. Total game-changer.

Located at our river launch site, Fleetwoods is the self-contained campus that stops school groups from endless headcounts across multiple locations. It sleeps 80 — mostly school groups, occasionally corporates discovering that team-building works better near water.

One Reception, One Tuckshop, One Purpose: streamlined check-in, essential supplies, and zero navigation confusion.

The Riverdeck is Fleetwoods’ soul — wooden deck overlooking the Vaal, perfect for briefings, sunsets, or just watching the river do its thing. Conference hall, dining hall, and enough infrastructure to run entire school camps on-site.

Accommodation ranges from school dorms (bunk beds, shared ablutions, clean and functional) to 1-bedroom ensuite tents for teachers and coordinators seeking quieter quarters.

The Boma Area — traditional fire pit with log seating — is where evenings transform into memory-making. Campfires, stories, marshmallows incinerated, and groups bonding over flames and stars.

Full catering included for school groups. River access is immediate. Activities coordinate from here, but guests can shuttle to Main Camp’s pools, zipline, climbing wall, and paintball when they need expansion.

Fleetwoods isn’t just accommodation — it’s a focused base camp where 80 people become one story.

THE FULL PICTURE: THREE CAMPS, ONE LEGEND

Hadeda Creek Main Camp — The original, the hub, the beating heart. Maximum capacity, maximum energy, every facility under the sun (or stars), and the place where camp legends are born daily.

Hadeda Creek Bush Camp — The quieter sibling. Same views, same access, slightly more breathing room. For guests who want adventure with a whisper of solitude.

Fleetwoods — The river outpost. Self-contained, purpose-built, laser-focused on groups who want immersion. Eighty souls, one boma, and direct access to the Vaal’s moods.

Together, they sleep 200 guests, operate across multiple hectares of Vaal riverfront, and offer everything from glamping luxury to school-dorm practicality. We have gates (plural), reception desks (plural), tuckshops (because sugar emergencies happen), restaurants, braai areas, pools, volleyball, ziplines, fishing zones, and enough kitchen hubs that nobody has to fight over stove space.

We built it between floods, expanded it with pocket change and stubbornness, and operate it with organized chaos and river-earned wisdom.

Choose your camp. Pack accordingly. The Vaal is waiting.

HADEDA Creek Main, Bush & Fleetwoods — three camps, one legend, zero apologies for the home to adventure that runs rapid.
